Anantnag, Sep 04 (KNO): What usually ends up in a garbage bin has found a new purpose in a small kitchen garden at Sadiwara village in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, where Advocate Farooq Ahmad Ganai is turning household waste into fresh food.
An advocate by profession and popularly known as the “Kachra Man of Kashmir”, Ganai has launched a grassroots initiative called “Waste into Taste”, under which kitchen scraps, fruit waste, dry leaves and weeds are converted into organic compost and then used to grow turmeric, ginger, mint, coriander and ladyfinger.
Ganai, a waste warrior and founder of “War Against Waste”, has for years been advocating source segregation, home composting and scientific waste management in the Dooru-Sadiwara belt. His campaigns have also included the “Give Plastic, Take Gold” initiative.
Through his latest experiment, Ganai is demonstrating how household waste can be transformed into a useful resource—and eventually return to the kitchen in the form of fresh, organically grown food.
Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Ganai said the initiative was aimed at putting his message into practice. “For years, I have been advocating source segregation and waste management. This time, I wanted to practically prove that waste is not waste bit it is a resource. What we throw away as garbage can come back to our kitchen as healthy, chemical-free food. This is the real meaning of a circular economy,” he said.
“I have grown turmeric, ginger, mint, coriander, ladyfinger and other crops in my small patch of land at Sadiwara village without using any chemical fertiliser or pesticide. The only fertiliser used is my own homemade organic compost produced from kitchen waste,” he added.
Ganai said the growth of turmeric and mint had been particularly encouraging, demonstrating that soil enriched with organic matter can support the cultivation of a variety of crops organically.
According to Ganai, the model rests on three simple steps—source segregation, home composting and organic kitchen gardening.
“Every household should separate wet and dry waste and convert wet waste into ‘black gold’ through composting instead of dumping it on roads. The same compost can then be used to grow safe and healthy vegetables,” he said.
He said the initiative could serve as a model for households across Jammu and Kashmir, adding that wider adoption of home composting could reduce the pressure on the existing waste-management system while promoting food safety and sustainable living.
“If every family composts its kitchen waste, we can significantly reduce the waste burden and also ensure safer food for our children,” Ganai said.
Ganai said he would now encourage youth and women’s Self-Help Groups to replicate the “Waste into Taste” model in their homes and communities under the broader campaign of “War Against Waste”.
He urged the District Administration Anantnag and the Rural Development Department to promote home composting and organic kitchen gardening as a joint initiative for a cleaner and healthier Kashmir.
The initiative, he said, is ultimately about changing the way people look at waste, from something to be discarded into a resource that can nourish both the soil and the kitchen—(KNO)
